Tech Note -I added a joggle of about 1/16” to the leading edge on both sides to compensate for the overlap of fiberglass. Hopefully this will keep me from having to do more sanding and body work on the finish. Scott didn’t mention this in the manual, but it makes since so I confirmed with him that this is what he did.

Summary: Sanded V stab

Details: Sanded V stab

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - 5.5 Hours

Summary: Horizontal, vertical

Details: Sanded panel inserts for H-stab. Filled in rib edges with micro. Grinded out excess glass on the V-Stab and inserted foam and Great Stuff. Paul did the same stuff today but also decided to glass out one side of his H-Stab. Tech note – we used low density Great Stuff and we felt that something else should be used since this is very hard to work with after it cures. We chose to use the low density to keep the Great Stuff from deforming the V-stab as it expands. My suggestion is that we should cut the foam as close to fit as possible and then Micro the foam into place.

Details: Laid up flanges on the ribs with 2 layers of BID about 2 inches wide – one inch for each surface.

Sunday, October 12, 2008 - 2 Hours

Summary: Create flanges

Details: Flanges were created by using a custom made flanging tool. We added flanges to both sides and both edges of HRIB1, HRIB2 and HRIB3 as well as both edges on the inboard side of HRIB4. Tech Note: We found that ¼” last-a-foam is too expensive to waste on SFTs so we used thick poster board purchased from Staples. Cut board to 1” wide and about 12” long. Glue two of these to another scrap 2.25” wide and 12” long. Use ribs to gap ¼” to create the space between the smaller strips. Gorilla glue is the best glue for board to board. Apply gorilla glue to one side and spray the other side with water. We want our flanges about 5/16” from the edge, so we need to build up the SFT (special flanging tool) with several strips of duct tape. The reason for this is that we will be sheeting with 3/8” foam sheets shooting for a nominal foam thickness of 5/16”, not more than 3/8” and not less than ¼”. Side note: These would probably come out a lot smoother and uniform if you built a jig out of plywood but it would take a lot more time to manufacture one. Might shave off a few grams and make the final panels more uniform to the H-stab= less sanding.
